Over at Final Girl, horror buff Stacie Ponder has proposed a little love-off for the 18th of March, entitled Hey Internet, Stop Being Such Cynical Effing Douchebags Blog-a-Thon. So to join in on the festivities, everyone must blog about something that they love about the movies. Stop being so damn cynical!
The movies are always a fun place to go. You know, when you're not battling little kids kicking chairs, sticky floors, people throwing popcorn, or uncomfortable protrusions in the seats. Not only is it a place to experience a movie on a huge screen, you get to be around people who (hopefully) enjoy the type of movie that you're seeing. When you get this sense of community, the movie can be a blast, no matter what it is. You might find yourself laughing just because the dude 10 rows behind you chortled and then dropped his bag of popcorn. Or you might jump 5 feet out of your seat because the lady in front of you just let out a death-scream. No matter what, when you're in the company of lovers of the art of the film, it makes the movie even more enjoyable.
This post is an ode to theaters worldwide. Rejoice! I'm putting the word out there that you, movie theaters, need to earn an Academy Award for seating all of our asses. Without you, we'd have no community. We could never yell at 14 year old girls who thought the ending of The Mist was hilarious, or scream our "Shut ups!" at the people who insist on laughing and talking (without watching) through the movie. Even the hostility is fun for people in a theater!
And let's not even forget all of those theaters that have facilitated someone's first date. I have you to thank, Johnstown Movieplex, for housing me and my then-friend, now-girlfriend in the movie The Messengers. If not for you, there would have been no hand-holding and no kiss, but alas, the movies just brings these qualities, and that sense of privacy that really isn't there, out in you.
So to conclude my ode to theaters, I'd like to wish every one of you a lovely day, and to go out and sit in those movie theaters and appreciate the fineness of their floors, sticky or not; the fabri
c of the seats, ripped and broken or not; the gigantic screen. Take a look around, notice the subtle nuances of the theater; the exit signs located in the front of the theater (they're even catering to your safety!!). Most importantly though, talk to the movie theater. It's always nice to hear a soft, cooing "I love you" to know you're appreciated.
Drive-ins, I'm sorry, maybe I'll get to you next time. It's nothing personal.
Definitely check out Final Girl for all of the details on today's lovefest. Share the lovin'!
